“Opportunity is often difficult to recognize; we usually expect it to beckon us with beepers and billboards.” ~William Arthur Ward
It’s interesting the ways in which opportunities present themselves. Sometimes it is true that there is a clear sign saying “follow me!” or something of the sort. A phone call from a friend to go out for drinks turns into a chance meeting with a Hollywood starlet. A found dollar bill turns into a chance to buy a winning lottery ticket. A lost job turns into a chance to create a new career. Things happen in ways we never expect.
And so it is with a slew of emotions that I come to you to tell you that my family has an opportunity. This one didn’t come in the form of a phone call or a billboard beckoning us. At first this one came quietly in the night. Whispering in our ears… “Change.” One simple word that could mean so many things. So we did. The change started with my husband being offered a new job whereby he would work from home full time. This presented itself with its own challenges having him home 24/7 [all you married women know what I'm talking about]. But the word kept coming back at night. Louder. Clearer. “Change.” So we changed some more. We took the plunge and I left my nine year career in the insurance industry to run my own photography business. But the word was louder still. Hollering at us, keeping us awake. I was at the point where I felt I might need a Ouija board and some burning sage.
And then we realized we were interpreting the word incorrectly. Instead of change, we had an opportunity. An opportunity to relocate. Since my husband was working from home and my kids haven’t entered into formal schooling yet we decided it was time for a Big Change. A move. To a completely new area.
So here it is, December 17, 2011 and we are relocating. We have sold our house and a good portion of our belongings. We are packing our boxes and heading south. Along with the geese and the hummingbirds we are searching for a warmer climate. Florida is the final destination with a temporary stop in South Carolina to spend a good amount of time with some relatives.
What does this mean for Jconn Photo? It means that my camera will still be clicking away. It means that I would still like to book weddings in New England and firmly believe that a flight on a commercial airline is really no big deal. This means that there will be more variety in what I shoot. It means that you are all part of my experience and I hope to share more of this journey with you.
Thank you for being with me thus far and thank you for staying with me. You all are literally the wind beneath my wings and never before have I ever felt so uplifted and fulfilled.
